Who We Are & Why We Exist
DYC is a non-partisan organization dedicated to youth impact & positive change through promoting youth empowerment and the youth voice in Durango in the 15-30 age group. We are a group formed by and led by young people, but which welcomes people of all ages to be involved. Young people are an important part of every community, but are often overlooked and underutilized in community groups and politics. Youth energy, enthusiasm, and idealism should be looked favorably upon so that a more diverse set of opinions can be reflected in our area. Youth are an asset in any community, and when supported, tapping into their energy becomes easier and facilitates positive change.
44% of the Durango population is comprised of young people from the ages of 15-34 (most recent Census statistics, 2000). We need to utilize our power in numbers in order to become well-represented locally in decision-making. Diversity is a value of this organization and we hope to promote cultural development and continuing diversity dialogues in town so that we can best include the many youth of our community.
How Will We Have Impact?
The youth coalition provides an umbrella organization that links youth groups and projects together in order to allow youth to share their ideas, energy, and efforts in order to build a stronger youth presence locally. The goal is to have an organization that will not detract from any one existing group, but instead help advance the causes of these groups and encourage the formation of new youth causes and projects. Many of our goals also align with the goals of groups such as the Children Youth & Family Master Plan. We hope to continue to work with them to achieve a community which truly values its young people. Some ideas that the group has discussed include:
* Youth Coalition website
* Youth Community Calendar
* Email ListServ with Youth Events, Meetings, & Updates
* Youth Council which would advise City Council and plug into the State Youth Advisory Council
* Placement of young people on the Boards of local organizations
* Resource and Skill Building Trainings for young people (media, organizing, diversity)
* Youth Art & Music Gatherings & Events
* Fundraising & Seed Grants for ideas, businesses, and projects from local youth
